Ashburn’s Ice Cream Recipe

Spread the love

“We didn’t make homemade ice cream. We made Ashburn’s Ice Cream,” said Bill Ashburn in the July-August issue. Now you can make Ashburn’s Ice Cream too.

We had this recipe ready and waiting, but just ran out of room. So many people have shared their Ashburn’s memories that we decided to make room this time. Will that be one scoop or two?

Ashburn’s Original Vanilla Ice Cream

(Converted from a two-hundred gallon recipe by Lawrence Ashburn in August 2002.)

  • 3 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
  • 49 ounces (3 ½ 14 ounce cans) sweetened condensed nonfat milk
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • ½ ounce plain gelatin dissolved in 1 cup warm water
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Adams vanilla extract
  • 3 drops yellow food coloring
  • 1 drop red food coloring

Mix ingredients thoroughly, and then add enough water to make one gallon of mix.

Freeze according to freezer’s directions.

  1. I remember the Ashburn’s store on Sylvania Avenue in Fort Worth during the 1950’s and early 60’s. Our parents would go for a drive in the evening and we’d stop for ice cream. Best lemon custard, as someone else said. The flavor I miss most is Hawaiian Pineapple – I’ve never tasted anything else like it. It was a creamy base with very finely minced pieces of pineapple and maraschino cherries, I think? And maybe some kind of nut? The pieces were just flecks, really. I would love to see THAT recipe!

  2. As a child my Daddy took me and Mom to Sherman Texas one Saturday as a special outing. We had no clue why or what was about to happen. We lived in Dallas, Texas. We were surprised that he drove all the way to Sherman for ice cream, he placed the order. WOW. We made that trip several time in the next year. Then one Saturday he said get in the car I have found something new. We went to Casa Linda Shopping Center and there was an Ashburns store, 20 miles one way from home. We loved that Hawaiian Delight and I still remember, at 75, the wonderful flavors. Other ice cream places tried to copy the Delight but never succeeded as ASHBURNS was the DELIGHT.

  3. There was 6 of us that would walk across Granbury Hwy to Ashburn’s on Berry St in Ft Worth. Papa would give us a nickel for a dip, sometimes a dime for 2 dips! My favorite was orange or lime, always!! Those were the good old days!

  4. Will forever be my favorite ice cream! So delicious and such a huge treat. 🥰

  5. OMG!!!! ASHBURNS, Lemon Custard Icecream was the greatest ever, I;ve tried others here in Georgia, but none of them stands up to ASHBURNS ICECREAM.
