Ashburn’s Ice Cream Recipe

Spread the love

“We didn’t make homemade ice cream. We made Ashburn’s Ice Cream,” said Bill Ashburn in the July-August issue. Now you can make Ashburn’s Ice Cream too.

We had this recipe ready and waiting, but just ran out of room. So many people have shared their Ashburn’s memories that we decided to make room this time. Will that be one scoop or two?

Ashburn’s Original Vanilla Ice Cream

(Converted from a two-hundred gallon recipe by Lawrence Ashburn in August 2002.)

  • 3 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
  • 49 ounces (3 ½ 14 ounce cans) sweetened condensed nonfat milk
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • ½ ounce plain gelatin dissolved in 1 cup warm water
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Adams vanilla extract
  • 3 drops yellow food coloring
  • 1 drop red food coloring

Mix ingredients thoroughly, and then add enough water to make one gallon of mix.

Freeze according to freezer’s directions.

  1. I just read a comment which mentioned Hawaiian Delight. That comment reminded me of the flavor I loved. This is one flavor I wish I had the recipe.

  2. I lived in Sherman as a small girl between the ages of 4 and 10. My favorite Ashburn’s flavor was one that had a nice pale green color and had nuts and pineapple. I think it had bits of cherries and other ingredients I don’t remember but I sure wish I had the exact ingredients. Hopefully there are those out there that may have that flavors name and the recipe. It would be greatly appreciated.

  3. I lived in Denison from 1961 until 1973 with one break from 68-69. The first thing we looked for in Irving was Ashburn’s! Luckily there was a store not far away, in Plymouth Park Shopping Center I believe. But the Denison store is home to my ice cream crush. PLEASE tell me there was a Tutti Fruitti flavor way back in the early 60’s. Looked like vanilla with little flecks of red, green, etc… I scoured the Earth looking for that flavor and found it ONCE in a gellateria in Rome, right by Trevi Fountain. I switched to vanilla when I got a little older and know it was the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. THANK YOU ASHBURN FAMILY! PS- I worked for Keith Ashburn while going to college, he was a super great guy with a great wife and a young child, about 1983. They really helped my wife and I out with our newborn baby girl. The Ashburn’s have always been great to me. THANK YOU!!!
