Snow Peas
This recipe appeared in the August 2010 issue of Texoma Living!.
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound snow peas, rinsed, dried, tips of the ends cut off, strings removed
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon dark sesame oil
- 15 large mint leaves, chopped
Heat olive oil in a large skillet on medium high heat. Add the snow peas and garlic and stir to coat with the oil. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring. You do not want to overcook the snow peas or they will get limp. They should still be a little bit crunchy.
Remove from heat. Stir in the sesame oil and chopped mint leaves. Serve immediately.

Soup Magic
By Dan Acree
Question: What’s the difference between a “bowl” of soup and a “cup” of soup? Answer: About two dollars. Twenty-plus years ago I was joking with a waitress and asked that question. The older woman with dozens of years waiting tables and dealing with table clowns like me left the table and returned with two empty bowls: A typical soup cup, and a standard low profile soup bowl.

Let Them Eat Cake
While Marie Antoinette gets credit for the “Let them eat cake” line, it is doubtful that she ever said it. And if she did say it, it is doubtful that she was referring to what we call cake. (That “she didn’t, but if she did” construction is called pleading in the alternative for you fans of arcane legal practices.) But I digress.

Even as a child,” said Jodi Castelli, “I saw the potential of discarded goods. I often rescued empty cereal boxes and other items doomed to the trashcan.” Today, the artist has graduated from the trashcan and instead combs antique shops to find vintage postcards, advertising, photographs, buttons, even game pieces, to serve as focal points in the visual stories she creates.
