When the economy tanked in 2008, progress slowed on plans to develop the intersection of US Hwy 75 at FM 691 across from Texoma Medical Center in Denison.

Perrin Air Force Base: 1941-1971

Pearl Harbor moved everything, including the training schedules, up a notch or two. The first class of flight cadets arrived on December 16. The eighty-one would be airmen started training on December 22. On February 20, 1942, the field recorded its first fatalities with a crash that killed Cadet Quinto Perkins and instructor Cyril Van Valkenberg. The first class graduated three days later, moving on to advanced training at another base. That February 23 also saw the dedication of the field and the Grayson Basic Flying School officially became Perrin Field.

The Tower Mystery

It looks like a castle keep with its crenellated top, just the place from which to pour boiling oil down on the heads of any knaves and varlets trying to capture Loy Park. But there has not been an attack of knaves and varlets in quite a while, so what is up with Grayson County’s medieval monument? The stone tower in the park stands on a small hill just off the road to the fairgrounds. It is separated from the lake by a cluster of oak and pecan trees.
