“The day of the Christmas parade in 1995, I had gone to a doctor for a second opinion. I came right up here, straight from the doctor’s office. I had a parade to do. I did the parade and then met my husband at a Christmas party. I sat there beside him and told him I had to go to the hospital in two days.”

She’s only been at Conrad’s Pies & More at 221 Sunset in Sherman for a little over a year, and business is good, but as sure as the turning of the earth, Sue Conrad will be opening a new restaurant before long. It’s what she does.

Leeman grew up in Bonham, and even as a small child he exhibited talent as an artist, painting and drawing. At 10, he found another outlet for the “ham” in his veins, a little wooden friend he named Nicky.

If Willie Riles, who has been bringing up the shine at Kelly Square in Sherman for 18 years, has ministered to their needs, they know that it is about something more, including a smile and an entertaining conversation.

They have to be fresh to be good in his estimation, which is why he mixes his dry ingredients the night before and puts them into zipped plastic bags, three batches at a time. In the morning all he has to do is add the eggs and liquid or oil and whatever other ingredients are called for, and he is in business.

The county’s boundries—Fannin County to the east, Collin to the south, Denton to the southwest, Cooke to the west, and the Red River and Oklahoma to the north—are delineated by dark strips of metal, and the four county precincts that existed at the time the courthouse was built in the 1930s are shown in different colored stones.

Animal Sanctuaries: No-Kill Shelters
Martha Hovers has been operating Arfhouse in Sadler for twenty years, ever since she transformed her grandfather’s farm into a “no-kill” animal shelter. “No-kill” means just that. No dogs are ever put down at the shelter. At last count, the facility has 314 dogs that patrol the property and greet newcomers to the gate with an array of barks, howls and wagging tails.

Give Philip Blander a black pencil, a white pencil, a sheet of gray paper, and he will take your breath away. The 59-year-old artist has done photorealistic portraits so lifelike he has people insisting that his work was not drawn. “One woman looked at a portrait I did and argued with me, telling me that it was a photograph! I love when that happens,” he said.

Why do radio stations have commercials?
Same reason cars have license plates: revenue. Some people think radio stations get paid for the music they play. I wish. In fact, we have to pay an annual fee to the writer and the publisher of each song. Advertising makes the record go’round.Category: FOB
