  1. It was almost Homecoming in Denison, and I was a 15 year old teenage girl from a rather poor family hoping to find something nice to wear to this special occasion.

I had been working and earning my own money since 12 years old because looking nice at school was important to me, but obviously my funds were very limited. I had purchased a couple of on-sale items at Ringler’s before, but today I was looking for that special Homecoming outfit and I only had a little more than $30.00 in my pocket.

On the rack, I saw a very smart looking black and yellow outfit, a dress with a black and yellow checkered, pleated skirt and a lovely jacket. It was so beautiful and the perfect color, but the already marked down outfit cost about twice what I had in my purse.

There were only a few people in the store so Mr. Ringler must have noticed that I kept going back to that one outfit after looking at others. He approached me and asked if he could help. He somehow understood that I wanted that outfit but didn’t have the enough money. He did not know me or my situation. He did not seem to just be trying to make a sale, but seemed like a kind friend who wanted to help. Suddenly he said something like, “You know I think this outfit should have been marked down again.” I believe the amount you have is sufficient.

I am now 60 years old, but I never forgot that occasion. Since that day, I have made many purchases, but the details I have forgotten. This was somehow different. It hadn’t been a simple transaction; it had been someone extending kindness to me. I really felt beautiful in the outfit, especially with that big Yellow Jacket mum pinned to the front with the long black and gold streamers on it.

Thank you, Mr. Ringler, for your kindness to me. I live far away now but sometimes my husband and I return to the area to visit relatives. I would like to know if you still live in the area and if you are well. God Bless you, Rhonda Wilson
