Burns Run

Anxious to be ready for Memorial Day and summer, Browall set to preparing the site for visitors. Work crews bulldozed and graveled roads, cleared the beach and made it safe for swimming, and hauled portable concession stands to the site. Browall wanted Burns Run to be an attraction for people all over North Texas and Southern Oklahoma, and he succeeded beyond any expectation. By late July, the site had attracted an estimated 225,000 people.

Digging Texas
Texas has provided good hunting for scientists looking for traces of the past. The Alibates Flint Quarries along the Canadian River in Moore and Potter Counties in the Panhandle represent some of the most important bodies of evidence as to the industry of ancient peoples. For ten thousand years, men mined the rainbow-colored flint in the dolomite outcropping of the Permian Age.

Traveling west from Sherman on U.S. 82 where Bar 7 Road hits the highway, you top a rise. The horizon reaches out as the land falls away, and you are out of the cross timbers and onto the prairie. This dividing line is a great fold in the earth’s crust running from central Texas to Montana. Geologists call it the Preston Anticline, and it is where the West begins.
