Summer Diversions

Where to Go. What to Do.
If you don’t have your summer travel plans made by now, you’re slacking big time. The price you’ll pay is higher transportation and accommodations costs. Booking early pays big dividends. You can use those Internet travel websites and once in a while get some killer bargains. But a good travel agent can get you those same deals when given a little time and a lot of flexibility on your part. The small fee you pay to avoid the hassle is absolutely worth it, in our opinion.
Freelance writer Paula Bennett polled area travel agents for their personal recommendations on travel destinations. The agents’ selections are based on a number of factors including value and experience. Our Texoma Living! staff selections are based on not much more than daydreaming. Here are the results:

Lapping the Field
There is nothing special about the old metal building standing in quiet obscurity somewhere in Sherman. The building is the home of C&S Racing, but there is no sign outside, nothing to indicate that behind the plain walls and nondescript paint are some of the most famous and respected racing and sports cars ever to take a checkered flag.

The Art of Neon
Not so long ago, the nightscapes of many American cities were bright with brilliant electric signs and the rainbow hues of glowing neon. Actually, neon (Ne) is used for red and orange. The other noble gases on the Periodic Table of Elements, argon (Ar), helium (He), krypton (Kr), and xenon (Xe), are used for other colors along with phosphors and a bit of mercury (Hg). The sixth member of the nobility is radon (Rn), but it’s radioactive and not to be messed with.

Death of the Dollar Movie
By Dan Acree
“Sherlock Holmes” was a movie I wanted to see. I even considered paying full price (gasp!). But before I could make the decision, it was off the screen at the Cinemark 24. It was pushed off the screen so that another film could be put on 8 of the 24 screens. Within a week “Holmes” was on the screen at the dollar movie. Before the week was out I cruised over to Movies 7, paid $1.75 and sat down with eight other bargain hunters for a night at the movies. No matter that there were about 300 empty seats for that performance.
