So, you’re the new DJ on the new radio station in town. How would you describe the 107.3 DOC-FM programming?

As a real valid attempt to be all things to all people. Adult hits, all familiar, no repetition, something you can listen to all day, every day. Sort of a pre-programmed iPod for adults.

How strange is it that a radio DJ’s real last name is LaRock?

Very. It’s real. Wanna’ see my driver’s license? I’ve raised four kids and supported a beautiful wife by being on radio.

Why do radio stations have commercials?

Same reason cars have license plates: revenue. Some people think radio stations get paid for the music they play. I wish. In fact, we have to pay an annual fee to the writer and the publisher of each song. Advertising makes the record go’round.

We notice that you mention the town of Savoy a lot. Why?

We did a drawing and Savoy won. But seriously, every broadcast radio station has a “city of license” where the tower is located. KQDR-FM (DOC-FM) 107.3 happens to be licensed to Savoy. Every hour, on the hour, we are required by law to identify ourselves as broadcasting from Savoy. Love that town.

You’re a Music Doctor. How long did it take to earn your degree?

29 years. I’m a slow learner, but I’m getting it. Slowly.

Is a Music Doctor ever allowed to ask you to remove your clothing?

Never.

Do I detect a midwestern accent behind that big voice?

Have you ever seen the movie “Fargo?” I can get people on the phone right now who sound like that. I was born in St. Paul/Minneapolis, but left for warmer climes in 1985. The cold must be good for you, though. Grandma LaRock lived to be 107.

If we got our hands on your personal iPod, what would we hear?

Steely Dan, Lynrd Skynrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, the Allman Brothers, ELO, Grateful Dead, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Brady LaRock, my 19-year-old musician son.

Brad LaRock is on 107.3 DOC-FM Monday through Frtiday, 6am- 10am. After his on-air job he walks across the hall to the General Sales Manager’s office where he holds court over the station’s sales staff.
