Over the past two years, his work has grown in both subject and technique. Real changes began to take place last spring when Dunlap decided to go back to the source of his sculpture work—found objects. “I broke loose and created a body of work that was a total departure from what I had been producing,” he said. “I sort of went back to where I started and used mostly found objects. Those works were good for me; I felt that I needed a change.”

This issue’s Style section is filled with memories. In our first feature we take you inside the home of a Texoma couple whose business life took them to places far away. They met new people, experienced very different cultures, and fell in love with the art and architecture of Asia. During their travel, whenever possible, they acquired objects large and small, and stored them to be shipped back to their Texas home.
Soup Magic
Question: What’s the difference between a “bowl” of soup and a “cup” of soup? Answer: About two dollars. Twenty-plus years ago I was joking with a waitress and asked that question. The older woman with dozens of years waiting tables and dealing with table clowns like me left the table and returned with two empty bowls: A typical soup cup, and a standard low profile soup bowl.
Today’s Fine Art
The meaning of fine art is blurred by the use of novel and stylistically unconventional mediums, as well as modern technologies and techniques. Changing views in society, culture, taste and education also skew the traditional meaning. I have a hard time with the term fine art in modern context. Art today goes far beyond idealized classical beauty, pure technique-driven works, and because of that, the meaning of fine art has been blurred.
